Description: POSITION OBJECTIVE Plan, prepare, produce and supervise production and distribution of primary Michigan Credit Union League publications. PRINCIPLE ACCOUNTABILITIES AND ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS 1) Within recognized guidelines, make choices regarding the editorial and graphic content of each issue of the MCUL’s weekly newsletter, Michigan Monitor, the quarterly Contact Magazine and the monthly Issues, Initiatives and Solutions newsletter. 2) Coordinate and supervise the entire publications process, including scheduling and leading editorial review meetings with interested stakeholders; generating story ideas and concepts; news/information gathering and interviewing; writing, photography, editing and layout; production, final delivery and/or web posting. 3) Monitor and update news content of the MCUL website, specifically the Latest News feature on its home page and the e-versions of Michigan Monitor, Contact Magazine and Issues, Initiatives and Solutions. 4) Produce the Issues, Initiatives and Solutions newsletter as an e-mail each month and post the publication on the MCUL website using the in-house content management system. 5) Assist in the creation of the quarterly SAS Gazette newsletter in partnership with the staff member assigned as the primary editor. 6) Maintain rigorous deadline schedule and budget guidelines. 7) Identify potential interviewees for audio podcasts and coordinate their recording for placement on the MCUL website. 8) Receive, edit and condense classified ads sent in by credit unions before posting the ads on the MCUL’s classified web page. 9) Attend selected MCUL/CUcorp and credit union functions for use in League publications, including MCUL/CUcorp policymaker meetings. 10) Advocate value of MCUL membership and promote value of products and services of CUcorp, the Credit Union System and business partners. 11) Other special communication projects as assigned, such as speeches, written reports and special publications. JOB SPECIFICATIONS 1) Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism or related discipline. 2) Outstanding communication, creativity and independent decision-making skills. 3) Three to five years experience as a reporter and/or editor at a trade association, newspaper, public relations firm, or other news/information organization. 4) Strong editorial judgement, interviewing and interpersonal skills. 5) Familiarity with and knowledge of the Internet and web-based journalism. 6) Strong familiarity with Associated Press writing guidelines and photojournalism skills. 7) Strong desktop publishing and word processing skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Office software. 8) Ability to supervise and provide direction for Publications Specialist. 9) Disciplined self-motivator with ability to meet deadlines while working quickly and accurately. 10) Ability to make decisions regarding printing, mailing, design and other costs within the framework of existing budget. 11) Ability to provide creative input in development of editorial graphic support and layout (magazine covers, logos, etc.). OTHER DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS Experience in and knowledge of Credit Unions and the Credit Union System.

Communications Interns

Organization: Capital Area Michigan Works!

Description: What is Capital Area Michigan Works!? Capital Area Michigan Works! is a network of resources. We partner with businesses to develop recruiting and retention strategies and we partner with job seekers to enhance education and career opportunities. What type of intern do we need? Capital Area Michigan Works! has a communications team of a Chief Communications Officer, Assistant Communications Officer, interns and council directors. We need interns to work in our communications department writing, helping plan events, conducting workshops and managing projects. This will be an un-paid internship. About 10-15 hours per week will be ideal. What will interns do? • Help communications team plan various events including promotion, logistics, set-up and day-of coordination. • Oversee the Tech Tours project, organizing tours of local businesses and quality of life assets for local IT and business students. • Serve as communications coordinators for Keep Learning… Our Future Depends On It, an education-focused non-profit arm of Capital Area Michigan Works! Interns will brainstorm and implement communications strategies, events, promotional activities and other ideas, as well as organize, coordinate and participate in monthly Creative Team meetings. • Serve as quality assurance for event calendar at www.camw.org/calendar by checking postings and working with staff to increase attendance and better communicate class and workshop offerings to website visitors. • Serve as a student representatives and liaisons at Legislative Breakfasts, board meetings and other CAMW! events. • Assist with student-focused communications efforts centered around talent attraction and retention, and quality of life. • Serve as members of Capital Area Michigan Works! Community Outreach Team. • Write content and press materials for various communication channels including e-newsletter, Pitch Engine, blogs and social media vehicles. What do I need to know already? James Madison, Journalism, Advertising and Communications majors are preferred, as are Public Relations Specializations, though we are flexible. Previous internship experience in a communications field is helpful and strong writing skills and a high level of professionalism are a MUST.
